A "Normal" Blood Test Might Be Hiding a Metabolic Crisis

You walk out of the doctor's office with your blood test results, and everything looks good. All the numbers are in the "normal" green zone. The report says you're healthy. But you're still feeling tired all the time, your brain feels foggy, your weight is hard to control, or your mood is off.  Modern medicine often focuses only on whether numbers are "abnormal" enough to signal disease. If they're not flagged red, you're told everything is fine. Your basic blood tests tell a bigger story about what's happening inside your cells—whether they're full of energy or struggling with a backup.

Only About 7% of Adults Are Truly Metabolically Healthy

A major study from around 2018 showed that only about 12% of American adults had truly good metabolic health. A more recent analysis (published in 2022 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology) found it had gotten worse: only 6.8% of U.S. adults had optimal levels across key markers like blood sugar, blood pressure, waist size, triglycerides, and cholesterol (without needing medications). That means roughly 93% of adults are dealing with some level of metabolic trouble.

Being "normal" today often just means you're on the path to problems later. True health—where you feel energetic and strong—is now rare. We can't just accept average as good enough. It's time to take charge of your own health data.

Lipids are just part of the big picture

Triglycerides: Not Just "Fat" in Your Blood

Many people see high triglycerides on a lipid panel and think, "I ate too much butter or fatty food." That's not usually the main issue. Triglycerides in your blood mostly come from excess carbohydrates (sugars and starches) that your body couldn't use right away.

Your body doesn't like too much sugar (glucose) floating in your blood—it can damage blood vessels, cause stress, and "glycate" (stick to) proteins. So, when cells can't take in more glucose, your body converts the extra into triglycerides and stores it as fat for protection.

High triglycerides are like a warning light: your cells are overloaded, and your body's safety system is working overtime to clear the excess sugar.

"High-Normal" Can Still Mean Trouble

Standard lab ranges are set to catch serious disease, not to show optimal performance. So if your fasting blood glucose is 99 mg/dL (just under 100) or triglycerides are 149 mg/dL (just under 150), a doctor might say "you're fine." But those numbers are often signs that your cells are already starting to struggle.

For real optimal health (the top ~7%), aim for optimal levels. Here's a simple comparison:

  • Fasting Glucose: Standard normal <100 mg/dL → Optimal around 70–85 mg/dL (some say ~73 mg/dL as ideal)

  • Triglycerides: Standard <150 mg/dL → Optimal under 80–100 mg/dL (often ~50–80 mg/dL for best health)

  • Hemoglobin A1c (average blood sugar over 2–3 months): Standard <5.7% → Optimal toward the lower end, like 5.0–5.4%

  • Blood Pressure: Standard <120/80 mmHg → Optimal often tighter, like <110/70 mmHg

  • HDL Cholesterol ("good" cholesterol): Standard >40 (men) or >50 (women) mg/dL → Higher is better

  • Total Cholesterol / HDL Ratio: Not always listed → Optimal <3.5

  • Waist Circumference: Standard <40 inches (men) or <35 inches (women) → Optimal well below these cutoffs

When your glucose is low (like 73 mg/dL) and triglycerides are low (like 50 mg/dL), energy flows smoothly through your cells—like water through a clean pipe. As numbers creep higher, that pipe starts getting clogged.

What's Really Going On Inside Your Cells? The "Energy Backup" Problem

Your mitochondria (tiny power plants in cells) turn food into usable energy. Three big things can go wrong in our modern world:

  1. Too much fuel coming in — We eat more calories (especially from processed carbs) than our bodies can burn.

  2. Damaged mitochondria — Poor sleep, stress, toxins, sitting too much, and bad food harm these energy factories.

  3. Cellular overload — When mitochondria can't handle more, cells "close the doors" to protect themselves. Glucose builds up in the blood, leading to sticky damage (glycation) on proteins and more stress.

Your blood tests are basically a report card on whether your mitochondria are thriving or getting overwhelmed.

Blood Pressure

We usually think of high blood pressure as stiff or narrow blood vessels. But a big driver is insulin resistance. Insulin helps open blood vessels by signaling them to relax (via nitric oxide). When cells resist insulin, that signal gets blocked—even if you have plenty of insulin. Vessels stay tight, and pressure goes up. So high blood pressure can be another clue to deeper metabolic issues.

Turn This Around

The 93% number sounds scary, but metabolic health changes quickly with better habits. With smart changes—like eating whole foods, cutting refined sugars and starches, moving more, sleeping well, and managing stress—many people see big improvements in these markers.

Start by owning your numbers. Ask your doctor for these key tests (or check your patient portal):

o   Fasting Glucose

o   Triglycerides

o   HDL

o   HbA1c

o   Blood pressure

o   Waist Circumference.

Together, they show the real picture inside your cells.

Your health isn't separate numbers on a page—it's one connected story about how well your body handles energy. If you're in that big 93% group—feeling "okay" but with markers edging toward the high end of normal—your cells are trying to tell you something. They're having a hard time with the modern lifestyle.
